Looking Back at the Mosaic Magic Shawl

The 2026 Brown Sheep Shawl Mystery Knit Along finished on June 22! We chose two winners—Colleen Elizabeth and Cathy Berkey—who knit gorgeous versions of the Mosaic Magic Shawl by Olya Mikesh:

A big thank you to all of the knitters who participated in this year’s MKAL, both on our social channels and in the Brown Sheep Company Crafters group on Facebook. Knitters chose 3 colors of Lanaloft to knit the Mosaic Magic Shawl. Seeing the colors knitters choose to mix together is always the highlight of the mystery knit along for us!

We created 4 color kits for the Mosaic Magic Shawl.

We selected the above kits (still available for a limited time!) to showcase the colorwork in the Mosaic Magic Shawl. With Mosaic Magic, knitters had the option to choose a light or dark color as their main color, with the two supplemental colors acting as contrast colors. You can read more about our ] choices and see alternate color options here.

Let’s take a look at this year’s participants!

Clue 1

Clue 1 introduced the first two colors of the Mosaic Magic Shawl and the first mosaic motif. It also showcased a simple lace design and a bobble row. Some knitters chose to use beads in place of their bobbles! You can start to see how the same colorways look, depending on which color you choose as the main color.

For example, Charlotte Trout, Kaye Mood, Denise Schmidt, and Connie Lefevre all chose Lilac Bouquet, but opted to start with different colors for the first contrast color. Julia Berg and Jessica Pardue both chose Deep Blue Sea, but Julia used the dark blue as her main color, while Jessica used white as the main color:

Clue 2

Clue 2 of the Mosaic Magic Shawl introduced the next mosaic pattern and the third color. Again, it was so interesting to see how different shawls made with the same colors looked, depending on which colors were used for the main color and the contrast colors. Jessica Pardue vs. Julia Berg is a striking example:

Clue 3

Clue 3 introduced yet another mosaic pattern—we really love how many different mosaic patterns were incorporated into Olya’s design, and how beautifully they worked together!

Clue 4

Clue 4 finished the Mosaic Magic Shawl with a touch more mosaic color work, alongside rippling bands of garter and lace in all 3 colors.

We hope knitters enjoyed this year’s mystery knit along! Olya Mikesh’s Mosaic Magic Shawl is a great, beginner-friendly mosaic color work pattern that produces stunning results in Lanaloft. And it’s still available to download for a limited time!
