7 Free Projects to Celebrate Granny Square Day

Granny Square Day is coming! Every year on August 15 the crafting community celebrates Granny Square Day with a special hashtag (#grannsysquareday2024 and grannsysquaremakes2024 this year) and lots of fun granny square posts on Instagram. You can learn more about the celebrations and find more free patterns here.

We love granny squares at Brown Sheep Company. Small, portable, and great for using up little bits of yarn, it’s no wonder Granny Square Day falls in August. What better project to take with you on a summer vacation?

Here are 7 fun, totally FREE granny square projects to prepare for Granny Square Day. We’ve included Brown Sheep Company yarn suggestions so it’s easy for you to get started!

Light and Shadow Blanket

The Light and Shadow Granny Square Blanket calls for Lamb’s Pride Bulky, so those squares should work up quickly! The beguiling ombre effect is achieved with 2 colors of Lamb’s Pride Bulky—3 different colors with 4 values each. Simple, but beautiful and effective!

Orla Love Bag

The Orla Love Bag showcases a sweet floral granny square in multiple colors, making it an ideal stash buster. Calling for a DK-weight yarn, choose scraps of Prairie Spun DK or Stratosphere in several colors to create a vibrant, multicolor rainbow.

Beaux Jestes Socks

crocheted socks featuring granny squares in red, yellow, green and orange

Who says you can’t crochet socks? The Beaux Jestes Socks feature a cute cuff of small granny squares in multiple colors. Another great stash-busting project, this pattern uses Wildfoote Luxury Sock Yarn and includes a second cuff option (although we’d probably opt for granny square cuffs on both!).

Oopsie Daisy Bandana

The Oopsie Daisy Bandana is chock full of sweet details. Designed for a yarn like Prairie Spun DK, the bandana features a beautiful daisy granny square and frilly, feminine border.

Mushroom Granny Square Bag

We’re so impressed with all the different styles of granny squares crocheters have conjured with just hooks, yarn, and a vigorous imagination. The Mushroom Granny Square Bag calls for DK-weight yarn, so choose something like Prairie Spun DK or Stratosphere to make the handbag size as shown.

Felted Granny Square Slippers

With fall just around the corner, we’re ready to start felting again! The Felted Granny Square Slippers feature a simple granny square design that forms perfectly to the foot. Calling for any worsted weight yarn, we were unsurprised to find crocheters on Ravelry turn to Lamb’s Pride.

Crochet Bobble Bucket Hat

Bucket hats are still in fashion, and granny square bucket hats in particular seem to be everywhere. We were drawn to the Bobble Bucket Hat because of its unique bobble granny square, reminiscent of a star. It’s also a relatively fast project, worked in an aran yarn like Harborside Aran.
