8 Summery Projects in Cotton Fleece + Cotton Fine
Are you ready to craft summer projects? Cotton Fleece and Cotton Fine are two of our favorite fibers for knitting and crocheting in the summer. In the past, we noticed the heat discouraged knitters and crocheters from pursuing new projects. However, times have changed! More and more designers are creating fun projects for the summer months, with crafters happily casting on in the heat.
If you’re wondering what to make on your summer vacation, we have a few fun suggestions. As always, many of these are available for free. Grab your Cotton Fleece and Cotton Fine, browse our selection online, or visit your nearest Brown Sheep retailer to stock up on yarn for the fun projects below!
Tops
Summer Roses Cross Stitch Top
The Summer Roses Cross Stitch Top has become an instant favorite. The allover boxy mesh and lace-accented sleeves are so flattering and sweet. It just looks very cool and comfortable to wear. Crocheted with Cotton Fine, the pattern is fairly straightforward and easy to make. Olya Mikesh (designer of the 2024 Brown Sheep MKAL Spring Meadow Shawl) designed the top, which also acts as a canvas for 3 floral motifs that are cross stitched once the sweater is finished. We adore this idea! If you are familiar with cross stitch, this tops opens the opportunity to create your own cross stitch design.
Prosperous Plum Tank
The Prosperous Plum Tank has so many fun details to keep the knitting engaging. Knit in Cotton Fleece, a mixture of cables and lace travel up the center, through the tank straps, and down the back of the tank. Eyelets feature in the neckline, armholes, and above the picot hem. It’s a lovely knit and perfect for the summer.
Shorts
Gams
Knit shorts—and especially short shorts—are very much in right now! The Gams shorts were inspired by Elizabeth Zimmerman’s Nether Garments from the Knitter’s Almanac. Designed with comfort in mind, they’re knit with Cotton Fleece and feature a simple but attractive cable design on one leg.
Unmentionables
If short shorts aren’t your thing, you might like Unmentionables instead. Unmentionables feel like a cross between gaucho pants (also resurging in popularity right now) and shorts, with the added flair of a bit of flouncy lace at the end. Knit in Cotton Fleece, these are the kinds of shorts you could live in all summer. They look very comfortable for lounging around the house, but fancy enough to dress up and wear out.
Shawls + Wraps
Spring Meadow Shawl
Of course, we had to include the beautiful Spring Meadow Shawl in our list of great summer knits. Colorful, textured, and so much fun to knit, the Spring Meadow Shawl can be turned into a shawlette if knitters substitute Cotton Fine for Cotton Fleece. The Spring Meadow Shawl includes a mixture of garter stitch stripes, lace, and floral mosaic colorwork. Don’t wait to download it—it’s only available for free for a limited time!
Goldenrod Wrap
The Goldenrod Wrap is crocheted with Cotton Fine in a sweet, lacy floral pattern. The openwork creates a fabric that’s lightweight and airy but broad, so it results in a versatile layering piece. Expect to get a lot of wear out of the Goldenrod Wrap. You can wear it wide across your shoulders in the summer, or bundled up in dense layers in the fall.
Accessories
Kaleidoscope Eyes Mat
The summer season is our favorite for modular crafting. Modular projects that are easy to carry travel well on vacation, and they also encourage stash diving and scrap crafting. The Kaleidoscope Eyes Mat works up into a travel-friendly rug size of approximately 23″ wide by 30″ long, and the individual crochet squares are 4.75″ in diameter. So they’re also great for travel!
One Skein Market Bag
As the title indicates, the One-Skein Market Bag requires just a single skein of Cotton Fleece to make. It’s knit in a very simple allover mesh pattern and results in a generously sized bag perfect for traveling this summer to the market, the beach, or anywhere else vacation takes you.
