7 Great First Fall Knits in Brown Sheep Company Yarns

Happy first day of fall! We’re excited to share some of our top first fall knits in Brown Sheep yarns. The return to knitting cozy garments and accessories in woolly yarns marks our favorite time of year.

It’s hard to choose from all the fantastic fall patterns in Brown Sheep Company yarns, and this short list is by no means comprehensive. However, we think the following selection offers a nice mix of garments and accessories, whether you need something small and quick to scratch the fall itch or you’re ready to launch your first sweater of the season.

Inkling Mitts

Originally knit in the since-discontinued Brown Sheep Sport Weight, the Inkling Mitts only require 70-90 yards of yarn. Knitters can substitute a single skein of Top of the Lamb to make 4 pairs or Nature Spun Sport to make two pairs of these fingerless mitts, which feature a rick rack edging and a textured net stitch.

Snickersnack Hat

Available in multiple sizes (child through adult), the Snickersnack Hat gives knitters an excuse to have a little fun with texture and color. Knit in Lana Bouclé, which offers a nubbly, soft texture, each Snickersnack Hat only requires a single skein to make if you’re knitting in one color. However, if you buy multiple colors, you can knit a multicolored Snickersnack Hat for everyone in the family and show off those slip stitch color blips!

Strijela Scarf

The Strijela Scarf showcases a striking, trendy arrowhead motif in a graphic black-on-white line art design. Knit in Lana Bouclé, the Strijela Scarf is a stranded colowork project worked in the round, so there is no wrong side or yarn floats to worry about.

Lady Catkin Pullover

The Lady Catkin Pullover is a simple circular yoke sweater with lots of small, elevating details. A cropped silhouette, abbreviated peasant sleeves, and a dusting of light lace in the yoke lend this Prairie Spun DK pullover a soft, feminine aesthetic.

Pentwater

Pentwater is one of our favorite recent designs. Published in last year’s first fall issue of Knitty magazine, Pentwater solves the difficult problem of how to layer properly for summer and fall weather. Knit in Cotton Fleece, it boasts colorful stripes of lace and stockinette and features an oversize fit, perfect for layering.

Chore Jacket

Recently published in Farm & Fiber Knits, the Chore Jacket is a quintessential fall cardigan that promises to always feel modern and in style. Knit in Harborside Aran, the Chore Jacket features German short row shaping in the shoulders and pockets and lovely textural stitches in the button band, hem, cuffs, and collar.

Migration

Cast on Migration now and knit a cozy, warm garment you’ll likely live in all winter. Knit with Lambs Pride Worsted, the Migration cardigan features both stripes and stranded colorwork and offers a wide range of sizes. We love the handy, hidden pockets, and the way the waistline colorwork flatters the figure.
